Thailand’s Thamkrabok Monastery has been called “the toughest drug rehabilitation regime in the world.” It doesn’t accept re-entry—one strike and you’re out. Treatment usually lasts between ten and twenty-eight days. Some would even imply that staying sober without it is unlikely to happen. I don’t believe in God or a Higher Power or spirituality of any kind. All of these things taken in sum cannot make me a dry drunk.
Unfortunately, statistics say it is possible, but highly unlikely for any long-term sobriety to take place if not grounded in a fellowship and continuous, rigorous work. However, one thing remains true and that is that statistics are designed to be broken. Just as alcoholism existed before AA, alcoholics have stopped drinking before AA existed.
If you have a problem with drug addiction or alcohol abuse and don’t feel comfortable with 12-step programs, don’t give up on being able to beat your addiction. Although 12-step programs have a history of much success in helping drug addicts and alcoholics recover from substance use disorder, they aren’t the only options for beating addiction. Secular Organizations for Sobriety is not one specific program, but rather a collection of programs that are autonomous from each other. SOS provides individuals with alternatives to spirituality based recovery programs. SOS hosts both online and physical face-to-face meetings to help people overcoming any form of addiction, from behavioral addictions to drug and alcohol addictions. I would be lying if I told you that ANY program will guarantee you lifetime, or even long-term, sobriety. There just are no guarantees available, and if anybody tells you different, there a liar. The current statistics say the deck is stacked against us to begin with because the road to recovery is slim and for few to begin with. It’s been effective for at least 2.5 million in AA alone, not including the other fellowship stats of recovered individuals. None of these 2.5 million people had any guarantee that there recovery efforts would be successful. What made them successful was that they realized they were involved in the process and were willing to get out of their own way and be led down a different path.
My own company, Workit Health, hosts online recovery groups for our members. Groups meet virtually Monday through Friday and focus on a wide range of topics. If you’re a Workit member, you can self-enroll in groups through the Community tab in the Workit app. Because one of the underlying premises of recovery is hope, seeing people who have made the journey into long-term recovery inspires others who are beginning their own journey to recovery. You can just sit and listen and learn more about recovery, or you can share about your situation.
Although it can’t help with medical detox, practically every other aspect of a well-rounded rehab program can be done through your phone. Not only is this much more flexible to your schedule, it’s also significantly more affordable. Before going further, we should recognize that Alcoholics Anonymous does work for some people—and there’s nothing wrong with choosing that path if it’s a good fit. While the program’s anonymous nature makes success rates hard to track, an independent 2020 study confirmed that AA is genuinely effective in plenty of cases.1 It has a loyal following, and for good reason. Read on to learn how to stop drinking without AA—including the many alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous—and how to decide which approach can help you quit drinking. Going to a 12-Step program or other support group offers encouragement and support for your long-term recovery.
